| Description | One common problem in biofuel production is the cytotoxicity of end product chemicals such as butanol and ethanol. To overcome the issue, a number of butanol-tolerant bacteria have been recently reported and expected as alternative butanol production hosts. Culture conditions such as pH and temperature for those butanol-tolerant bacteria possibly affect their butanol tolerance. However, very little is known about the effect of the culture conditions on microbial butanol tolerance. Here, we clearly demonstrated the non-negligible impact of culture pH on butanol tolerance of the tested strains and functioning of the cellular membrane. Our findings provide new insight into efficient butanol production using butanol-tolerant bacteria. | |||||||||||||||
