Description Type Abstract
Description The satellite remote sensing has been used to detect wildfires. Because of the limited temporal and spatial occurrences of fires, it is difficult to quantify the temperature or emitted radiance from the fires on the remote sensing images especially at high spatial resolution with long revisit period. This study tried to retrieve representative flaming temperature and its subpixel contribution on an ASTER image over the open burning on Akiyoshidai plateau, Japan on February 15, 2004. Although ASTER has no band at mid infrared (MIR) region which is most sensitive to radiance form fire, the surface radiance were increased due to the fire on ASTER shortwave infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) images. We assumed that the SWIR and TIR radiances are composed of the fire radiance and background radiance, reflected at and emitted from the surface at SWIR and TIR bands, respectively. First we estimated the typical background radiance based on the radiances from the dried and burned grasses of the nearby areas. Because the typical width of the fire front is much smaller than the spatial resolution of ASTER TIR (90m), the fire radiance was initially estimated neglecting the spatial fraction of the background area. Then the flaming temperature and fractional contribution were retrieved by fitting the Planck function with the spectral fire radiance. The estimated flame temperature and the fractional contribution were 590 to 1400 K and less than 0.027, respectively. The estimated temperature was lower than the flame temperature of 1100 to 1600 K obtained by the visible to shortwave infrared spectrometer (Fieldspec Pro 3) at Akiyoshidai on February 23, 2013. We assume that the coarser spatial resolution of the satellite remote sensing decreased apparent fire radiance in comparison with the field measurement.
